For 31 years the Emerald Cup has been a staple for contestants aspiring to the national and pro ranks of bodybuilding in the Pacific Northwest. And along with the evolution of the 'body industry' where fitness, figure, bikini and physique divisions have made an entrance to share the spotlight with bodybuilding, the Emerald Cup has evolved right along with them.

“It's a Brazilian thing!” That's a phrase that has become more and more familiar when a Pro Physique division event is held. In this fledgling division's inaugural season last year Karina Nascimento, Juliana Malacarne and Patricia Mello proudly carried the Brazilian colors as the trio combined to win four contests in 2012.

By this date last year the Desert Muscle Classic, St. Louis Pro and the California Governor's Cup had contributed to the inaugural year of the Pro Physique division. And it was just one day short of a year ago that promoter Jon Lindsay staged the first L.A. Grand Prix Pro Physique event at the Veteran's Auditorium in Culver City.

Women's Bodybuilding: Decades of Changes – Part II
As the fledgling 80's gave way to the 90's, women's bodybuilding continued to grow, and with the 90's, numbers continued to soar – in more ways than one. A fitness class within the NPC was born and by 1995 the fitness division was also introduced at the Ms. Olympia. A new breed of competitor came with this class as lean, strong, athletes – many of whom were former gymnasts - stormed the stages at amateur events.....anxious to reach the pro level.
