Metairie, Louisiana, June 23: The NPC Greater Gulf States has been a major contest staple on the annual competition calendar dating back to the early 80's. It has served Louisiana as a major national qualifier as well. This year, promoters Luke and Robin Tesvich gave it a little more gas as they welcomed the IFBB Pro division that included the Physique and Bikini classes on the women's side.
It began as the NPC California Collegiates back in 1999, with but 27 competitors--14 male and 13 female bodybuilders. But the fella who won, Charles Ray Arde, eventually went on to earn pro status. That was the beginning of big things to come for the show, promoted by Lonnie Teper, Editor-at-Large at IRON MAN Magazine.
